10 Tips on Optimising your E-Commerce Website for Mobile Devices
Recent statistics have shown that 40% of internet users across the world, have bought products or services online. Moreover, that 55% of the time consumers spend on online ecommerce sites is via their mobile devices.
This means that if your ecommerce site is not optimised for mobile devices, then you are likely losing out on sales.
So what can you do? Well here are our tips for optimising your e-commerce website for mobile devices:
- Is time of day relevant? Apparently it is – research has shown that people tend to use their tablets in the evening and their mobile phones while commuting in the morning – to browse online. So you could focus different aspects of your marketing campaign on early morning commuters and evening browsers.
- Shopper personality: Some shoppers love a deal, some flick from item to item, some will only buy after extensive research, some are impatient, some buy from the same stores all the time, some love designer products and some just love to browse, rarely buying. There are lots of different types of shoppers so you need to know which type of shopper you’re targeting and give them the information they need if you’re going to maximise sales.
- Off-canvas navigation: This is a way to make the most of the reduced space on mobile devices. Essentially it is a sidebar that slides in and out of the page and there is no end to the creative ways these can be used and designed.
- Fixed navigation: As opposed to non-fixed navigation where the main menu bar disappears into the heavens as you scroll down the page. Fixed navigation helps viewers access the main meu items quickly.
- Images: Make sure that your images load quickly on mobile devices. People are more impatient on smart phones than on a PC – so if the images of your products take too long to load – then there is a high probability that the consumer will leave.
- Responsive designs: If a consumer has to scroll from side to side and zoom in to read your content they become frustrated and leave. So bite the bullet and have a new responsive e-commerce website developed.
- Button sizes: Make sure the size of your call-to-action buttons and your navigation menu buttons are big enough to be seen and to be pressed easily on a mobile device.
- Colour contrast: Make sure the contrast in the colour of your call to action buttons and of your text fonts display clearly against the background colour and in all light conditions. Many people use mobile devices in low light conditions and if they can’t distinguish your buttons or easily or read your text clearly – they will leave.
- Content: Make sure the product descriptions are concise and consider using a ‘Read More’ link. You should also test the text in your call-to-action buttons, as you may find that ‘Secure Checkout converts much better than ‘Buy now’.
