mCommerce – 5 Best Practices for Online Success

If you are thinking of making the move into eCommerce, then you need to give due consideration to a number of important factors that can either make or break your online success. As more and more people use the internet to search for information, products or services, it is only sensible that you maximise your online potential.

mCommerce is simply the term for eCommerce conducted across all mobile devices. This is just not semantics, there are very good reasons to consider the functionality of your ecommerce website across all mobile platforms.

Essentially, to ensure that the consumer has a positive experience with your online shop – there are 5 best practices you need in place:

  1. Responsive designs: If your mCommerce website does not display well across iPads and smartphones, your sales will plummet. Users become very frustrated when they have to scroll from side to side to read your content. Research has shown that if consumers cannot view your website properly on their mobile devises – 61% will leave immediately.
  2. Branding: Your branding must be consistent across all mobile devices. Consumers expect to see the same website on their smartphone as on their PC. Strong branding is at the core of any strategic marketing campaign – and brand recognition is essential to build trust with consumers and for them to feel comfortable and to buy – so keep it consistent.
  3. Browsing: Make it easy for your customers to browse your home page. Many people scroll up and down a website to decide which category of products they want to look at or which service they want to learn more about. So either have a clearly identified search feature on the home page or more importantly, the ability to browse through the different categories – which is more user-friendly than a search box.
  4. Navigation: Make sure that customers can access products or services easily by having broad sub-categories within each main category. But do not make customers drill down 4 or 5 levels of sub-categories, because they become frustrated quickly with this – particularly if they make a mistake and have to go up 5 levels to return to the main category selections.
  5. Touch steps: Reduce the number of steps between seeing and buying – the fewer the steps and the easier these steps, the less abandoned shopping carts you will have and the more completed transactions. Users want a quick and simple process when buying online so simplify your mcommerce site and remove all the clutter.

Simple, clean mCommerce sites seem to work best. So make your site easy to navigate, pleasing on the eye and uncluttered. Limit anything that distracts from the purpose of your mCommerce site and make it easy for shoppers to buy.
